On Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Maine Organic Farmers and Growers Association will host a hide-tanning workshop for beginners at MOFGA’s Common Ground Education Center. The cost is $75 per person; $50 for MOFGA members. Bring a bagged lunch.
Join MOFGA and local instructors Trevanna Grenfell of The Wildwood Path and Sean Murphy of Murphy Family Farm for a day exploring the ancient skill of turning animal hides into soft leathers or beautiful furs. For farmers and hunters through the ages, the hide has been one of the most valuable parts of any animal – but only if they know how to treat it!
Bring your questions and your willingness to learn, but please contact us if you would like to bring your own hide so that we can determine whether your particular project fits with the workshop. We’ll work on rabbit hides together and you’ll have a chance to see demos of other types of hides so that you can get a feel for how to work with different styles. We will approach this skill with sensitivity and compassion, and no experience with hide-tanning is necessary. However hide-tanning isn’t for the faint of heart! Be prepared to see, touch, smell, and talk about raw animal hides – and to experience the magic of turning rawhide into leather!
