What’s not to love about the venison jalapeno popper? I mean it’s spicy, creamy, savory and salty all in one little bite-sized appetizer. They are so delicious in fact, I have often found myself offering to man the grill just so I can sneak a few extras before they hit the hoards of hungry hunters and disappear. I do not know about you, but I can tuck a few of those away! Turning those little nuggets of deliciousness into a bit more hearty sandwich or “hero” makes for the perfect deer camp lunch.
Spread Ingredients:
8 ounces of softened goat cheese
8 ounces of softened cream cheese
4 strips cooked bacon, crumbled
1 clove garlic, minced
1 (or 2) jalapenos, ribs, and seeds removed, diced
You’ll also need:
A loaf of good bread (baguette, sourdough or ciabatta is best)
1 perfectly grilled venison steak seasoned with salt & pepper
Greens (like spinach or arugula) optional
The Spread
In a small bowl blend goat cheese, cream cheese together until well combined. Softening the cheese by leaving them to come to room temperature first makes this process easier. Fold in the crumbled bacon, minced garlic, and jalapenos. *
Slather spread on both sides of your bread (I love to grill my bread slightly first). Top with sliced venison steak and greens if you are making yourself feel healthier and enjoy.
*Spread can be covered and keep cold for up to three days making it a great make-ahead camp meal.
