Spooky Cemeteries

Riverside Cemetery, Lewiston

As a group approached the mausoleum they felt a strange, oppressive energy in the air. At this point, I personally would have turned back, but instead, they continued walking toward the stone structure. One person decided to try to communicate with whatever entity was possibly present but didn’t receive any response. Well, at least not a verbal one.

The air grew increasingly cold, and some turned back. The person who tried communicating with the presence gave up and lit a cigarette. As she inhaled, she heard a cracking noise. The top half of a birch tree near the mausoleum had split off and was falling right toward her! She and her friends ran, and the tree crashed to the ground right where they had been standing.

Smith-Anderson Cemetery, Windham

In addition to being a historically important place in town, it’s also said to be one of the most haunted places in Maine. This cemetery is the final resting place of a number of notable, early Windham residents including the Anderson family for whom the cemetery is named.

A number of paranormal groups have investigated the area, including Maine Ghost Hunters and Southern Maine Paranormal Society. During each investigation, orbs have appeared in photos. Some explorers report hearing a male voice and one has even reported seeing the faint image of a male face in a photo taken at the cemetery.

One of the most talked-about areas is the “den,” which was created as an area for bodies that were awaiting a grave to be created. People report that a male spirit is housed here ― and he’s not friendly. Another notable area of the cemetery is the Anderson family crypt, which is quite large. Visitors report hearing a distinct knocking sound coming from the structure.

Buck Cemetery, Bucksport

The leg-shaped stain on the memorial, according to legend, came about when Colonel Buck burned a witch and her leg rolled out of the bonfire. His heirs tried to clean the foot off the stone and are said to have replaced the monument twice ― but the foot … keeps … coming … back!

The curse was called down upon the colonel by the deformed son of the witch: “Your tomb shall bear the mark of a witch’s foot for all eternity!” Or something like that. Not the most horrifying of curses, when you think about it.

Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor

Mount Hope was a location in the movie, “Pet Sematary” by Stephen King. If being a part of a horror movie is not enough, the cemetery is home to countless soldiers. People have seen shadows and felt an overall sense of unease at the cemetery. Other people who have made their way to Mount Hope have claimed to see ghostly figures roaming about.
